Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival — Kabul Serena
Airport meet and greet, then check-in at the Kabul Serena, the city's five-star landmark. After lunch in its gardens you ease in gently: Babur's terraced garden laid out before 1530, the Shah-Do Shamshira Mosque, and sunset over the city from Wazir Akbar Khan Hill. Dinner at the Serena's Silk Route restaurant.
Day 2 — Kabul in depth
A full day among the capital's treasures: the National Museum's Bactrian masterpieces, the old city's Kah Faroshi bird market, Timur Shah's mausoleum, and the Chihil Sutun palace gardens. Lunch is at the best table in town; the afternoon ends with carpets and lapis in reputable dealers' showrooms, your guide handling the negotiation.
Day 3 — Over the Unai Pass to Bamiyan
A private 4WD carries you west over the 3,200-metre Unai Pass into the Hazara highlands — a spectacular five-to-six-hour drive with picnic stops wherever the light is good. In the afternoon you reach Bamiyan and stand before the empty niches of the 55-metre and 38-metre Buddhas, carved in the 5th–7th centuries and destroyed in 2001. Overnight at the valley's best hotel, its terrace looking straight at the Buddha niches.
Day 4 — Band-e Amir — the blue lakes
Morning at Band-e Amir, Afghanistan's first national park: six travertine-dammed lakes of impossible blue at 2,900 metres. A private boat, a lakeside lunch, and time to simply sit — this is the day people come for. Return past the ruined Red City of Shahr-e Zuhak glowing in the late sun.
Day 5 — North through Samangan to Mazar
A long, beautiful driving day north: the Shibar Pass, the Salang approaches, and the rock-cut Buddhist stupa of Takht-e Rostam at Samangan — a monastery carved downward into the rock in the 4th century. By evening you reach Mazar-i-Sharif and Mazar's five-star hotel.
Day 6 — Mazar & ancient Balkh
The Blue Mosque — the Shrine of Hazrat Ali — is one of Islam's most beautiful buildings, its turquoise tilework tended by white doves. In the afternoon, ancient Balkh: the Mother of Cities, where Zoroaster is said to have preached and Rumi's family lived, with the shrine of Khwaja Abu Nasr Parsa and the ruined walls of the Bala Hisar.
Day 7 — Fly back to Kabul — departure
A short morning flight returns you from Mazar to Kabul in under an hour — the ticket is included at pure cost, no markup. Depending on your international departure, there is time for last shopping or lunch at the Serena before your airport transfer.
