Are there cultural or religious customs I need to be aware of?
Yes, Afghanistan is a deeply Islamic country, and it is important to respect local customs, including dress codes and religious practices. Any form of disrespect toward Islam, including derogatory comments about religion or religious figures, is considered blasphemy and can lead to serious legal or physical repercussions, including arrest or violence. During Ramadan, refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours out of respect for those who are fasting. Afghanistan has strict cultural norms regarding gender roles and LGBTQ+ rights. Discussing these topics openly can make locals uncomfortable or lead to offense. Always show the utmost respect in religious settings. Disrespecting religious symbols, holy books, or prayers can deeply offend and lead to confrontation.
What kind of cultural experiences will I have?
Tours are designed to provide cultural immersion, including visits to local markets, mosques, and interactions with Afghan locals.
Is it safe to interact with the Taliban?
Yes, our guides ensure that all interactions with local Taliban authorities are handled respectfully and safely. The Taliban prioritize the security of foreign visitors, and many are welcoming, smiling, and curious about people visiting their country since the takeover and the end of the American invasion. Like people everywhere in the world, some Taliban members are more friendly than others, but the majority are approachable and respectful. Our guides will manage all interactions at checkpoints, and it’s important to remain polite and cooperative during these encounters.
In Ghazni, you’ll also find Taliban who are very interested in talking to foreigners, often asking questions about your country and sharing their own experiences. Our guides will be with you at all times to facilitate these interactions and ensure your safety.
Is there internet access in Afghanistan?
Internet access is available in most hotels in Kabul and larger cities, though the connection can sometimes be slow or unreliable.
Can I exchange money in Afghanistan?
Yes, currency exchange services are available in Kabul and major cities, but it’s advisable to bring cash (USD) as exchange rates can vary. The local currency is the Afghani (AFN), but US dollars are widely accepted. It is highly recommended to bring USD, as there are limited ATM services for foreigners.
